Truth Haters - Part III - Rationalization

June 26, 2009 - Pastor Ed kang

"Nearly every grave moral failure begins with a small sin." Chuck Colson, regarding recent news of a governor's 8-year long affair, says in his commentary on Breakpoint, "We humans, you see, have an infinite capacity for self-rationalization. We reason that we can give in to those seemingly minor temptations—say an emotional attraction to a co-worker, or just one drink at the party—because we think we know the boundaries. We think our reason can keep us safe." The beginning of King David's downfall (2 Sam 11:1-15) began with such an "indiscretion" which he clearly kept in a "secret corner" of his highly compartmentalized life, made evident from his sense of moral outrage towards the scenario presented to him by the prophet Nathan, yet failing to see the clear sin in his own life. May we take warning from David's and from Governor Sanford's example, and come clean before God with the plain truth of our confession.
